John Burke Red Cardinal 1978
The discourse about the role of public sculpture continues. Apparently we’re not bored yet!! There’s a lot of questionable people who seem to think that we learn about history from statues of old problematic white men. Can’t tell you the last time I learnt anything from one of those lads to be honest - I walk past them and don’t take a second glance. I say pull em all down, put them in a museum somewhere that all these folk can go see them and learn about the horrible legacy of the British Empire. Then with all this space we can replace them with fun, colourful, abstract sculptures inspired by birds. But this is just my little liberal opinion.
I pass Red Cardinal SO MUCH every time I’m at home. It’s on Lower Baggot Street and it’s LOVELY and joyful, and surprisingly bird like in real life. It is lively and bright without being garish. The picture doesn’t do it justice, you need to go and see it.
I just sent a really angry message to a nail salon on Instagram because they charged me a cancellation fee when I told them I was isolating for covid reasons. Actually mad that that’s their policy when we’re in a panny-d??!! So I have shitty nails, I’m down £20 and also I wasn’t even cancelling for covid, it was a big fat lie because I’m actually going home to Dublin and I forgot I had this appointment. Oops. I’m a bad person. I hope whoever reads my angry DM feels bad too. It’s the PRINCIPLE.
Hope you’re doing well! Todah Rabah.
