Liu Wei Microworld 2018
My main goal of these newsletters is to try to encourage people to stop saying ‘I don’t get art’. THERE IS NOTHING TO GET. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again! Might actually get it tattooed on me. You don’t have to like art, you don’t even have to care about it at all. That’s FINE. but (big but) you should NOT feel like you’re missing out on some big secret. I don’t know why the art world makes people feel stupid, you’re not! I promise. All you need is an open mind and willingness to engage.
I understand how, standing on one side of the glass wall, you might look at Liu Wei’s Microworld and think - what is this? what am i missing? It’s kind of the like the experience of looking into a zoo enclosure, except there’s no life, no animals to spot. It’s just a weird alien landscape of massive cold balls and metal scraps. But that might be all there is to it. I LOVE THIS. It’s creepy and other worldly and makes me feel tiny. I want to walk in amongst it but I can’t - as frustrating as being at a zoo tbh but with more mystery. If you’re the kind of person who would look at this and say ‘I don’t get it’ - here’s the real kick. NEITHER DO I. It is what it is. And what it is is a brightly lit room with shapes in it. THAT’S MAD THAT SOMEONE MADE THAT. Cool stuff.
I wrote too much again!!!!! OOPS. I didn’t even write enough about the art. Forgive me. I have had a very nice long weekend with friends and lots of laughter. Remember to have fun for the sake of it. We can’t be responsible and productive all the time. NO WAY, NO WAY*.
Congrats you’ve made it to the end! Todah Rabah.
