Mark Rothko, No. 10, 1949
I LOVE ROTHKO. Now, I know this is the worst kind of art for people who say ‘I don’t get art’ because Rothko literally just paints squares of colour and not even in a really cool way. Just grab a big paintbrush, whack it on, there we have it. Yes, they’re simple and yes, you could probably do this.
I like these kinds of paintings (big, bold, not really OF anything) because they’re meditative. I feel like we talk a lot about sound meditation these days (hello, Kendall Jenner and her sound bowls) but there’s definitely a visual meditative experience to be had with a nice Rothko. You can kind of lose yourself in them. Honestly, I could have chosen any Rothko to put here. I don’t have a favourite. But this one is nice and warm. I like a sunset orange. Anyway, next time you’re in a gallery and you see a Rothko (or similar kind of abstract, plain painting), give it some time. Sit with it. Listen to it. Let your thoughts wander. Do it for longer than is comfortable, I dare you!
I bite my nails. In order to keep myself in check and to help beat the habit I have to have them painted. I do sometimes still bite them when I have nail varnish on them, which I’m aware is even more gross of a habit, but it’s rare. I worry that having long, painted nails makes me look like someone who is very high maintenance. I’d like to think that I’m actually fairly low maintenance but I do paint my nails and wear make up most days so maybe I’m kidding myself. Anyway, please don’t look at my nails and thinking that I’m anything BUT cool and chill. Thanks!
Congrats you’ve made it to the end! Todah Rabah.
