Sarah Lucas, Self Portrait with Fried Eggs, 1996
OH BOY. This could be one of my favourite photos ever. I am obsessed with Lucas’ androgynous look, manspreading, with heavy boots, short hair and cigarettes at her feet. She is so cool and incredibly intimidating. This looks like some sort of end-of-the party scene in Freaks and Geeks and I LOVE IT.
Food often represents sexual body parts - you’ve all used the aubergine emoji, right? Or remember that peach part in Call Me By Your Name? Lucas does the same thing in her self portraits, commenting on objectification of the female body. I feel like she’s almost making fun of straight male desire - presenting as tough, masculine and rebellious while highlighting her feminine form. I don’t think its a coincidence that the stage is set on what looks like kitchen tiles either. It’s all GOOD!! MORE PLEASE!
For some reason I STILL cannot embed the videos into these emails which is ridiculously inconvenient and RUDE. So I just wanted to flag that you do need to click the link in green below to see the tiktoks each week. This email is about art and LAUGHS and I cannot stress how important it is that you also enjoy the funny content. Up to you though, really. It’s 2022 now and I have only just realised that on my phone I can limit my time on apps. So I’ve given myself a daily limit on how much time I can spend on tiktok. Hopefully the quality of these emails doesn’t decrease because of this. It is an incredibly selfish move on my part.
Congrats you’ve made it to the end! Todah Rabah.
Eleanor x
