Rana Begum No. 764 Baskets, 2017-2018
I was reminded of this work recently and had forgotten just how nice it was. Almost 1000 baskets were installed inside St. Peter’s Church in this beautiful, cloud-like, swelling form. All of the basked had been handmade in Bangladesh by traditional basket makers and were made of bamboo. It’s a quiet, minimal cocoon celebrating craft and culture.
Art in churches always feels a little extra special, because of the spiritual magic that happens in places like this. Even if you’re not religious, places of worship always have a special feeling to them. I have mixed feelings about the word craft, because it tends to be used to describe art that’s often traditionally made by women, and often seen as less valuable or important artistically. This work however takes that definition and flips it. This is STUNNING and moving. This is art that makes you whisper, in awe and want to sit down and spend time with it. Lovely stuff.
I HATE confrontation. I love drama. I love gossip. I love scandal. But, if anyone ever turned to me saying ‘we need to talk’ I think I would die right there on the spot. Text me it, email it to me, send a carrier pigeon. ANYTHING but face to face awkwardness PLEASE. I’ve realised that I’m very bad at being honest in these situations. Because instead of saying how I feel, I’ll just say what I think will just bring a quick and hopefully painless end to the conversation. Not a good trait really, but what are these emails if not to share my truth.
Congrats you’ve made it to the end! Todah Rabah.
