Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Razorbill, 2020
It’s Frieze week in London!!! Basically, this is the UK art world’s awards season. The Fashion Week for galleries. The Premier League final of art. Galleries show some art in a big tent in London and people with lots and lots of money walk around and buy things. It’s exciting because of the people watching but ALSO because of the new art to see. And what I like about Frieze is the PAINTINGS. There are lots of paintings at Frieze. Because paintings are easier to sell I guess??
Anyway, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye is a very good painter. She makes these beautiful portrait works of mysterious people who she claims are all fictional. They’re wonderfully full of character and feel very real. I LOVE THEM. That’s all really. A nice portrait painting. Nothing ground breaking, but good good good stuff.
My brain is a bit fried because it’s Frieze, so I’m running about and talking to too many people so my battery is a bit worn down. Don’t have much to say here apart from just acknowledging how hilarious small talk is. Frieze small talk is particularly funny because you can ask people if they’ve seen any good art. Pretty wholesome and fairly gas question that I might continue using outside of Frieze week actually.
Congrats you’ve made it to the end! Todah Rabah.
